Two best-selling trail bikes with very different suspension philosophies. The Giant Trance X uses Maestro - a dual-link suspension that has been refined over more than fifteen years of WorldCup XC and Enduro racing. The Specialized Stumpjumper uses FSR Horst Link with the Genie shock, the suspension design Specialized has built much of its mountain bike identity around. Both are around 140 mm rear travel with 150 mm forks. The Trance X is the value buy. The Stumpjumper is the more refined platform - and the gap is smaller than the price difference suggests.

At the M / S3 mark, the Trance X Medium (615/455) sits slightly lower in stack and shorter in reach than the Stumpjumper S3 (620/465) - more compact at the same nominal size. The Stumpjumper consistently runs a touch longer, which suits riders coming from modern long-and-slack bikes. At the small end, both bikes start around 605 mm stack but the Stumpjumper S2 reaches 440 mm vs the Trance X S at 435 - close enough that crossing brands works for most riders. At the top, the Trance X XL (650/505) sits between Stumpjumper S4 and S5.
Buy the Trance X if value matters - Maestro is a legitimately excellent suspension design and the bike gives up little to the Stumpjumper on the trail for thousands less. Buy the Stumpjumper if you want the longer, slacker geometry, the Genie shock, SWAT storage, or the wider Specialized service network. Both bikes are competent enough that most riders will not feel a meaningful trail-side difference; the Stumpjumper is the marginally better platform and the Trance X is the marginally better spend.
Specialized Stumpjumper - slacker head angle, Genie shock progression, and wider fit range help on rough trails
Giant Trance X - Maestro suspension is the equal of FSR for most riders and the price savings are substantial at every tier
