How to Measure Your Height for Bike Sizing
Get an accurate reading before you reach for any chart - even half an inch can shift you to a different frame size.
- Remove your shoes and stand on a hard floor with your back against a wall.
- Look straight ahead. Place a flat object (book or ruler) on top of your head, pressing it gently against the wall.
- Mark the wall where the bottom edge of the object sits. Step away and measure from the floor to the mark.
- Record your height in both centimeters and feet/inches for easy chart references.

Sizing Tips from Professional Bike Fitters
Height is a starting point, not the answer
Two riders at 5'10" can need different frames if one has a longer torso and the other has longer legs. Pair your height with an inseam measurement for a reliable fit.
Standover clearance matters
You should clear the top tube by at least 1-2 inches on road bikes and 2-4 inches on mountain bikes when straddling the frame flat-footed.
Between sizes? Consider your goals
Size down for responsive handling and a racier position. Size up for a more relaxed, endurance-friendly posture. Component swaps (stem, seatpost) can fine-tune either choice.
Brand sizing is not universal
Always check the manufacturer's geometry chart. Reach and stack values are the most consistent way to compare frames across brands.
Want to go beyond these charts? Our Complete Bike Fitting Guide covers saddle height, reach, handlebar position, and cleat alignment for a truly dialed-in ride.
