How do I measure my head for a bike helmet?

Wrap a flexible cloth tape around the widest part of the head, about an inch above the eyebrows, and keep the tape level - that is how Smith and Giro both describe it. Measure twice and use the larger reading. Hair moves the number around, so measure the way you will actually ride.

What if my head measurement falls between two helmet sizes?

There is no universal rule, and any site that gives you one is guessing. Smith tells riders to try both sizes in person. The retention dial fine-tunes a shell that is already close; it cannot make a shell bigger or smaller. Check the chart for the exact model, try both sizes, and keep the one that sits level and stays put.

Do bike helmet sizes match between brands?

Not reliably. Each brand publishes its own chart, and ranges overlap differently from model to model - Giro alone has adult and youth ranges that meet at the same numbers. Use your measurement to shortlist, then read the chart for the specific helmet you are considering.

When should I replace a bike helmet?

After an impact, follow the instructions that came with the helmet. CPSC requires bicycle-helmet instructions to cover what to do after a crash, and damage is often invisible from the outside. For ordinary service life, use the manufacturer guidance for that model rather than a blanket number: there is no CPSC rule that every helmet expires after a fixed number of years.

Can a child wear a helmet labelled for adults?

That is decided by the specific product, not by the words "youth" or "adult" on the box. Read the label and manual for the exact model: they state the ages and activities it is made for, and coverage for younger riders differs between models. Our fit checker only shows a helmet for a young rider when the model records evidence for that age.

How should a correctly fitted helmet feel?

NHTSA describes it as 2-V-1: about two finger widths between your eyebrows and the front edge, side straps forming a V under and slightly in front of each ear, and one or two fingers under the buckled chin strap. Open your mouth wide and you should feel the helmet pull down. Then shake your head - it should move with you, not on you.

The helmet pinches slightly. Can I adjust it?

Loosen the retention dial and reseat the pads that came with the helmet. If one spot still digs in at the loosest usable setting, the shell is wrong for that head, and wearing it in will not change that. Move to another size or another model, and never sand foam, cut straps, or add padding the manufacturer did not supply.

Does the fit checker tell me whether a helmet is safe?

No. It handles sizing and fit: which recorded sizes cover your measurement, whether a model records the use you picked, and which physical checks pass. No helmet protects against every impact, and the label and manual that came with the helmet are the authority on certification, intended use, and replacement.

How the fit check works

Head circumference is the filter, not the answer. A model only shows up as a candidate when its recorded size range covers your measurement and its recorded use covers your riding. Ranges overlap, so when two sizes both contain your number you get both. There is no house rule that says size up or size down; brands disagree on that, and the chart for the model you are buying wins.

The checker ends in one of four places: candidate sizes found and a physical check to run, adjust and check again, try another size or model, or no verified match. It never says a helmet is safe, certified for you, or guaranteed to fit. CPSC requires bicycle-helmet instructions to warn that no helmet protects against every impact, and that warning does not stop being true on a sizing page.

Head shape only changes the result when a model publishes its own headform, the way Specialized and Trek do on specific round-fit helmets.
