Statewide law allows sidewalk cycling with conditions in Kansas. K.S.A. § 8-1592 lets bicyclists ride on sidewalks unless prohibited by local ordinance or official sign. A rider on a sidewalk has the rights and duties of a pedestrian, must yield to pedestrians, and must give an audible signal before overtaking. Wichita, Topeka and Lawrence prohibit sidewalk cycling in their central business districts. See K.S.A. § 8-1592 (Riding bicycles on sidewalks).
Sidewalk cycling is legal in Kansas only when you follow the statutory conditions — typically yielding to pedestrians, giving an audible warning before passing, and slowing to a near-walking pace in crowded areas.
