Is a bike bell legally required?

It depends on where you ride. New Jersey, New York City, Georgia, Indonesia, Germany, Denmark, the Netherlands, Ontario (Canada), Queensland and New South Wales (Australia), and most of the UK and India require an audible warning device on any bike ridden on public paths or streets. In most US states it isn't federally mandated but is still strongly recommended, and most multi-use path bylaws require one. If you ride shared paths, fit a bell regardless of local law.

For shared-use paths and slow urban traffic, a clear-ringing brass or aluminium bell (Spurcycle, Knog Oi, Crane E-Ne) is friendly and understood. For busy road commuting with cars, an air horn (Hornit dB140, AirZound) at 130+ dB actually grabs a driver's attention. Bells say "excuse me"; horns say "stop what you are doing right now." Many urban commuters carry both — a bell on the bars and a horn for emergencies.

How loud should a bike bell be?

Around 70–90 dB at 1 m is typical for a mechanical bell — loud enough to alert a walker at 10 m without startling anyone at close range. Premium brass bells (Spurcycle Original, Crane Suzu) ring a pure sustained tone that projects further than the same decibels from a cheap stamped bell. Electronic horns (Hornit dB140) reach 120–140 dB — genuinely painful up close, used only as an anti-car emergency tool.

Where should I mount a bike bell?

On the left side of the handlebar, inboard of the grip so your left thumb can reach it without moving from the bar. Most modern bells clamp to 22.2 mm flat bars or 23.8 mm drop bars. Bells with rubber-shimmed clamps (Knog Oi, Spurcycle) fit both. Fat-bar commuter bars (31.8 mm at the clamp) need a bell with a special adapter, and aero carbon drop bars with no round section require a wrap-mount or mirror-mount bell. Check your bar clamp diameter (usually printed near the stem) before buying.
