Best MTB Knee and Elbow Pads of 2026 — Trail, Enduro, and DH Picks
MTB pad design split in two directions over the last decade: soft, all-day pads using non-Newtonian foam (D3O, Poron XRD) for trail and enduro, and hard-shell hinged pads for downhill and park. Pick the wrong category and you'll either bake on the climb or bruise on the descent.
EN 1621-1 (Level 1 / Level 2) is the European impact-attenuation standard for motorcycle armor — the same protocol most premium MTB pads now meet. Pads without an EN 1621 rating are decoration, not protection.
Below are the eight pads we keep recommending — five for adults, three for younger riders. Sizing is the single biggest variable; measure twice and prefer brands with published kneecap-to-thigh ranges.
What to look for in knee & elbow pads in 2026
- CE EN1621 certification level (1 or 2)
- Hard-shell vs sleeve construction
- Foam type (D3O / Poron / VPD)
- Breathability for long climbs
- Strap retention vs slip-on design
Sizing & fit
Pad fit relies on thigh/forearm circumference + leg/arm length. Always measure and consult brand size chart — sizing varies widely.

Wearing pads loose to "stay cool"
A pad that slides on impact transfers force into bone instead of absorbing it. The right pad is snug enough that you can pinch maybe 1 cm of fabric at the top of the strap.
Skipping elbow pads on flow trails
Elbows take the second-highest impact rate after knees in MTB crashes (Whyte/SRAM injury study, 2022). If you've splurged on knee pads, the matching elbow pads are usually 60% of the price.
Reusing pads after a hard crash
D3O foams partially compress on impact. After a hard fall the protective rating drops. Inspect for permanent deformation and replace if in doubt.
Buying motorcycle armor for MTB
Moto pads are heavier, hotter, and have a stiffer hinge. They work, but you'll wear them less and carry them more. MTB-specific pads are the right tool.
The final word
Pads only work if you actually wear them. The lightest, best-vented soft pad you'll keep on for the whole ride beats the burliest DH armor that lives in your pack. For most trail riders the Race Face Charge or 7iDP Sam Hill is the right pad — pair with elbow pads of the same family for matched coverage.
