Question 1

Do I need knee pads for trail riding?

Accepted Answer

For blue trails and beyond, yes - a low-profile lightweight pad (Fox Launch, G-Form Pro X, POC Joint VPD Air) is comfortable enough to pedal in all day and saves a knee when you scuff over bars or wash out a corner. For XC and easy singletrack, many riders skip them; for enduro and DH, they are non-negotiable and should be paired with elbow pads and a full-face helmet. Pads with CE EN 1621-1 impact certification (Level 1 or 2) are tested to protect against meaningful impacts, not just scrapes.

Question 2

What does CE Level 1 vs Level 2 mean on MTB pads?

Accepted Answer

CE EN 1621-1 is the European standard for motorcycle and cycle impact protectors. Level 1 pads must transmit no more than 18 kN under a standard 5 kg impact test; Level 2 pads must transmit no more than 9 kN - roughly twice the protection. Level 1 is adequate for trail and light enduro where comfort and breathability matter most. Level 2 is what you want for bike-park laps, enduro racing, and downhill.

Question 3

Hard-shell or soft D3O / PORON pads?

Accepted Answer

Hard-shell pads (Fox Launch Pro, 7iDP Sam Hill) offer excellent abrasion resistance and redirect impact over a wider area - ideal for downhill and rocky terrain. Soft viscoelastic foams like D3O, PORON XRD, and VPD stay flexible while you pedal and harden under impact - much more comfortable for all-day enduro and trail riding but slightly less abrasion-resistant. Most trail riders end up with soft pads and only bring hard-shell pads for bike-park days.

Question 4

How should MTB knee pads fit?

Accepted Answer

Put the pad on over your riding shorts, stand up, and bend into an active riding knee bend (about 30-45°). The pad centre should sit directly over the kneecap with even coverage above and below. The upper silicone gripper should sit at or just below the quadriceps - not up onto the thigh where it slips down. If the pad rotates when you pedal, go down a size. If your calf bulges out below the pad, go up a size.

Question 5

At what age should my child wear knee pads on a bike?

Accepted Answer

As soon as they move from balance-bike pavement to real trails or ramps - typically 5-8 years old. Pad sizing for kids goes by thigh / calf circumference rather than age, so measure before you buy: Fox Launch Youth, G-Form Youth Pro X, and 7iDP Sam Hill Youth all publish cm ranges. Pads are especially important for kids learning to jump or ride the pump track, where scuffs and case-outs happen almost every session.

Question 6

Can I wear knee pads for road or gravel riding?

Accepted Answer

Very unusual on road. On rough gravel with loose surfaces (chunky Unbound-style riding), some riders run minimal sleeve-style pads like G-Form Pro X knee sleeves for the occasional washout. For typical tarmac road riding, pads are not worn and would overheat - focus on glove and jersey choices, and helmet quality, for crash protection.
