Most trail riders end up with soft pads and only bring hard-shell pads for bike-park days.

Put the pad on over your riding shorts, stand up, and bend into an active riding knee bend (about 30–45°). The pad centre should sit directly over the kneecap with even coverage above and below. The upper silicone gripper should sit at or just below the quadriceps — not up onto the thigh where it slips down. If the pad rotates when you pedal, go down a size. If your calf bulges out below the pad, go up a size.
