Should I size up or down on a bike?

The smaller bike feels easier to reach, but the larger one puts the handlebars at a more comfortable height. That is a real between-sizes problem, and "go smaller for sport, bigger for comfort" won't solve it. Compare the positions each bike can provide and rule out any size that cannot meet your needs within its adjustment limits. Sometimes both are workable. Sometimes neither is.
What would justify going up or down?
Start with measured height and cycling inseam, then confirm that the two candidates belong to the correct model-year chart. For each, check standover, saddle range, sustainable cockpit position, brake reach and control in the intended terrain. Note your torso and arm proportions and any mobility concerns.
There are four honest outcomes: size down when only the smaller bike passes, size up when only the larger bike passes, choose either with a documented setup when both pass, or gather more evidence when neither conclusion is supported. The two-size worksheet defines each outcome and gives you somewhere to record what you know about each bike. Being close to the middle of a height range cannot tell you whether the bars will be within comfortable reach.
Road: check achievable bar position
A smaller road frame often has less stack as well as less reach, but confirm the actual table. That can shorten the frame while putting the bars too low. A larger frame may raise the front end while making the hoods too far away. Race and endurance models may offer different solutions at the same nominal size.
For racing, test the position you can sustain now, not a professional rider's posture. For endurance riding, assess neck comfort, relaxed elbows and braking from your normal hand positions. Use the road size calculator for a starting range, then compare cockpit setup.
A road example: short enough, but too low
Imagine the smaller frame lets you reach the hoods comfortably, yet the bars remain too low even with the manufacturer-approved spacer arrangement. The larger frame provides more height but leaves you stretched. Before ordering either, ask whether a compatible stem or bar would produce a usable position, and get the proposed setup in writing. A promise that the shop can "make anything fit" is not enough.
If neither setup works, compare another model with a taller front end relative to its reach. This is where an endurance road bike can belong on the shortlist alongside a race bike. Keep the preferred riding position, but be willing to change the model that delivers it.
Gravel: distinguish racing from loaded riding
For fast mixed-road riding, check a sustainable seated position and access to the hoods and drops. For rough tracks or loaded trips, also check steering with luggage, room to move and braking on uneven ground. Handlebar flare and hood position can change how the same frame reach feels.

A gravel bike that feels comfortable on an unloaded spin may still need a luggage check before a trip. Ask whether the intended bags interfere with your hands, knees or standing movement. Check mounting points and clearances on the size you will buy; do not assume a photo of a larger frame shows the room available on the smaller one.

Mountain: assess seated and standing fit
Cross-country riding may involve long seated climbs, while technical trail riding demands room to move and reliable controls while standing. Compare reach, stack, wheelbase and effective seat angle, and test with the intended suspension setup. Check whether the dropper can reach your pedaling height and lower enough without exceeding insertion limits.
A longer frame can feel composed in one situation and difficult to maneuver in another. Do not use a shorter stem to assume away every consequence of sizing up. Start with the MTB calculator and check exact geometry for your discipline.
A mountain bike can feel roomy while standing but different once you sit down to climb. Frame reach is measured from the bottom bracket; seated reach also depends on where the saddle sits. Ask the shop to set the saddle and suspension appropriately on both sizes before comparing. Otherwise, you may be choosing between setup differences.
For a dropper post, "it has enough travel" is only part of the answer. The extended post must suit your pedaling height, the frame must accept the necessary insertion, and the lowered position must provide the room you need. Request those checks for your size rather than relying on the specification of the bike shown in a review.
E-bike: add mounting and low-speed checks
Electric assistance does not reduce cockpit length or fix inaccessible brakes. Check saddle minimum height, stepping over or through the frame, walking the bike, starts, stops and tight turns. Include normal cargo where it is safe to do so. Weight and balance can make a geometrically plausible bike unsuitable for a particular rider.
A step-through frame may improve access but does not guarantee a short reach or suitable saddle range. Use the e-bike calculator as a starting point and have the shop demonstrate controls and safe handling.
Try the tasks that happen before and after the ride
Ask the shop to explain the assistance controls, then practice a controlled start and stop in a suitable area. Check walking the bike around a tight corner and holding it upright while mounting. If your normal route involves a gate or a narrow parking space, describe that task rather than asking only whether the frame is small enough.
More assistance does not help when you are trying to park or maneuver the bike by hand. If weight or balance remains difficult after the position is set, consider a different bike. Do not assume that dropping one frame size will solve a handling problem caused by other features.
What if both sizes genuinely fit?
Compare them on the same route, in the same shoes and with the saddle set for you each time. Start with normal riding, then try the movements that matter for your use: looking behind on a commute, standing on a climb, or moving around the bike on a trail you can ride safely.
Write down the trade-off in plain language. Perhaps one needs a replacement stem, while the other works with the supplied parts. Perhaps both positions work, but you find one easier to maneuver. Cost, adjustment room and a preference you can reproduce on a second ride are reasonable ways to choose. There is no need to invent a single correct answer when both options are suitable.
Agree on the setup before buying
Respect seatpost insertion, saddle rail clamp marks and manufacturer limits for stems, spacers and bars. Set saddle position for pedaling before judging cockpit reach. Do not slide it forward merely to rescue an overlong frame. Cockpit changes can affect handling and cable or hose routing.
Use the advice on booking a professional fit if pain, numbness, control access or uncertainty persists. Sometimes a different model, not another size, is the useful answer.
