The rule
Statewide law allows sidewalk cycling with conditions in Alaska. 13 Alaska Administrative Code § 02.455 lets bicyclists use sidewalks unless prohibited by an official sign or local ordinance. A rider on a sidewalk has all the rights and duties of a pedestrian, must yield the right-of-way to pedestrians, and must give an audible signal before overtaking and passing. Anchorage and Juneau ban sidewalk riding in their downtown business districts. See 13 AAC 02.455(d)-(e) (Bicycles on sidewalks).
Sidewalk cycling is legal in Alaska only when you follow the statutory conditions — typically yielding to pedestrians, giving an audible warning before passing, and slowing to a near-walking pace in crowded areas.
