What BikeSize checked
BikeInsure covers the bicycle or e-bike and the attached accessories listed on the policy. It does not cover the rider's medical bills or liability to other people. The current program uses a $150 deductible per covered loss and allows up to $50,000 of insurance per bike or e-bike. Casual and qualifying e-bike coverage applies in the United States and Canada. Riders who race can choose Bike Race Insure, which extends covered riding, racing, and transit worldwide.
The provider publishes two useful price examples, though neither is a promise of what your quote will be. A $5,000 bike used for casual riding with accidental-damage and theft coverage is shown at about $21 per month. A $3,000 race bike with accidental-damage coverage is shown at about $26 per month when the stated USA Cycling or USA Triathlon member discount applies. Policies run for one year and are paid in automatic monthly installments.
Claims start in the customer portal. Damage claims need photos and a written bike-shop estimate; theft claims need a police report and details about the security device. BikeInsure says most claims filed since 2021 were paid in under 14 days and 40% were resolved in under seven days when documentation was complete. Common exclusions include wear, maintenance, mechanical breakdown, cosmetic damage, unattached personal items, unexplained disappearance, and commercial delivery use. Great American Insurance Company underwrites the policy. BikeInsure also publishes a referral program, but BikeSize does not have an approved tracking URL, so every provider link on this page is a direct nofollow link.
Coverage matrix
A check means the provider offers the coverage somewhere in its current U.S. product. It may still require an option, usage selection, or state approval.
| Coverage item | Status | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Theft | May be optional. Security and proof requirements apply. | |
| Theft at home | Garage, residence, and lock conditions vary by policy. | |
| Theft in transit | Carrier custody and vehicle-rack rules need a close read. | |
| Crash damage | Sudden accidental damage, subject to deductible and exclusions. | |
| Third-party liability | Where available, this may be an optional add-on. | |
| Medical payments | Limits and state availability apply; this is not health insurance. | |
| Race coverage | Usually requires competitive use or a racing option. | |
| Training rides | Check the selected usage class and territory. | |
| E-bikes | Only eligible legal classes and configurations are covered. | |
| Cargo bikes | Confirm the model and use; paid delivery is often excluded. | |
| Worldwide territory | May require an optional extension or competitive-use policy. | |
| Roadside assistance | Benefit limits and qualifying breakdown rules apply. | |
| Rental reimbursement | Distance, event, timing, and dollar limits may apply. |
How much does it cost?
$252-$312 examples is the public range or starting point BikeSize could verify. Your bike value, ZIP code, deductible, usage, and optional coverage set the real premium. Published examples are useful for orientation, not budgeting to the dollar.
The published $3,000 race-bike example includes a USA Cycling or USA Triathlon member discount. Exact eligibility and price are confirmed in the quote.
What works well
- A single $150 deductible applies across the current casual, competitive, and e-bike coverage types.
- The competitive-use policy covers eligible riding, racing, and international transit worldwide.
- Replacement-cost coverage is available up to $50,000 per insured bicycle or e-bike.
- The provider publishes concrete claim-document requirements and reports that most complete claims are paid in under 14 days.
What to double-check
- Medical payments and third-party liability are not part of the bicycle equipment policy.
- Theft protection is optional, and unattended bikes must meet the policy's security conditions.
- Casual and e-bike policies are limited to the United States and Canada rather than worldwide territory.
- The published price examples cover different bike values and usage types, so an individual quote is still necessary.
What is excluded
- Medical expenses, bodily injury, and third-party liability claims.
- Normal wear, corrosion, maintenance, mechanical or electrical breakdown, and manufacturer defects.
- Cosmetic scratches or damage that does not affect the bicycle's function or safety.
- Unattached personal items, clothing, phones, earbuds, and accessories taken without the bicycle.
- Commercial delivery use, mysterious disappearance, and theft that does not meet the policy's security rules.
Start the claim in the BikeInsure customer portal. Supply the loss date and location, a description, bike and policy details, and contact information. Damage or transit claims also need clear photos and a written repair estimate. Theft claims need a police report or report number and details about the security device. A licensed claims administrator reviews the file and may work with the selected bike shop.
BikeInsure publishes customer stories on its own review page. BikeSize did not convert provider-selected testimonials into an independent claims rating.
