What BikeSize checked

Velosurance is the most configurable provider in this three-company set. Its physical-damage policy covers sudden accidental damage, theft, vandalism, fire, and damage while the bike travels by road or air in the United States and Canada. The policy uses declared-value replacement cost rather than depreciation, and Velosurance says there is no upper value limit for an eligible bicycle or e-bike. Markel American Insurance Company underwrites and issues the policy.

The annual premium starts at $100, while the final quote depends on the bike's value, location, deductible, and add-ons. Deductible choices are $200, $300, or $500. Monthly payments are available through automatic payment. A multi-bike policy receives a stated 10% discount, and Velosurance also lists membership credits for USA Cycling, USA Triathlon, and IMBA members.

The base policy already includes several cycling-specific extras, including limited reimbursement for a rental bike, event fees, spare parts, and damaged riding apparel after a covered loss. Riders can add liability, medical-gap coverage, worldwide physical-damage coverage, and roadside assistance. Racing is covered when competitive use is selected. The trade-off is more policy setup: useful protection such as liability, medical payments, and worldwide territory is not automatic. Cosmetic damage, wear, and paid delivery or messenger use are excluded.

Claims begin online with photos, a written account, a repair estimate, or a police report for theft. Velosurance says a claims manager contacts the customer within two business days and most claims are paid in less than 14 business days when the file is complete. How much does it cost?

From $100 is the public range or starting point BikeSize could verify. Your bike value, ZIP code, deductible, usage, and optional coverage set the real premium. Published examples are useful for orientation, not budgeting to the dollar.

Velosurance states that multi-bike policies receive a 10% discount. It also lists membership credits for USA Cycling, USA Triathlon, and IMBA members.

What works well

  • The provider states that eligible bicycles and e-bikes have no upper insured-value limit.
  • Replacement-cost coverage does not reduce a covered settlement because the bicycle is older.
  • Optional liability, medical-gap, worldwide, vehicle-contact, and roadside coverages allow a rider to build a broader policy.
  • The base physical-damage policy includes limited rental-bike, event-fee, spare-parts, and riding-apparel benefits.

What to double-check

  • Deductible choices start at $200, higher than the lowest deductible published by BikeInsure or Sundays.
  • Several useful protections, including liability, medical-gap, worldwide, and roadside coverage, cost extra.
  • Commercial food-delivery, messenger, courier, and other paid delivery use is excluded.
  • The provider publishes a starting annual premium, but a quote is required for a meaningful price comparison.

What is excluded

  • Normal wear, expected maintenance, mechanical failure, and other gradual damage.
  • Cosmetic dings, scuffs, or scratches that do not affect safety or function.
  • Food delivery, messenger, courier, document delivery, and other paid commercial use.
  • Losses that do not meet the policy's theft-security or documentation requirements.
  • Worldwide losses unless the worldwide physical-damage extension has been added.
How claims work

Start the claim online with the policy details, loss date, and a short account of what happened. Add photos, a bike-shop repair estimate, or a police report for theft. Velosurance says a claims manager will make contact within two business days. Repairable losses are paid at retail repair cost less the deductible; total losses use the declared value less the deductible.

Review context

BikeSize did not use a changeable third-party star score as evidence of claim quality. The profile relies on current policy and claims pages instead.
