Do I need a kickstand on my bike?

Kids kickstands are sized in wheel-diameter bands: 12-14" (toddler / balance bike graduates), 14-16" (most 4-6-year-olds), 16-20" (most 6-10-year-olds), and 20-24" (older kids and small youth bikes). Pick the band that matches the wheel size on the bike, not the kid's age. Most kids kickstands rear-axle mount because kids bikes often lack a chainstay clamp area; if the bike already has a kickstand boss between the chainstays just behind the bottom bracket, a side-mount kids stand will be more stable.

What's the difference between a side-mount and a center-mount kickstand?

Side-mount (also called chainstay-mount) kickstands clamp around the left chainstay just behind the bottom bracket. They're the cheapest and most common style - most adjustable adult kickstands and most kids stands work this way. Center-mount kickstands bolt to a dedicated plate between the chainstays, directly behind the bottom bracket. They distribute load more evenly, support more weight, and almost always come as two-leg stands that hold the bike vertical instead of leaning. Center-mount is the right choice for any touring, cargo, or ebike build; side-mount is fine for everything else.

Do ebikes need a different kickstand than regular bikes?

Usually, yes. Ebikes routinely weigh 50-80 lb before a battery, rear rack, or cargo, and a stamped-steel side-mount kickstand rated for 60 lb of bike will eventually bend or slip under that load. Look for an aluminium-alloy two-leg center-mount stand (Pletscher Comp 40, Greenfield, Massload) rated for 80-110 lb. Many purpose-built ebikes ship with a frame-integrated stand - if yours did, replace it with the same mounting style rather than retrofitting a side-mount.

My kickstand fell off and damaged the chainstay - what went wrong?

Almost always one of three things: the clamp bolt loosened over time and wasn't checked, the clamp was over-tightened on a thin-walled chainstay (more common on aluminium and carbon frames), or the kickstand's weight rating was exceeded. Use a torque wrench at 8-10 Nm, fit a rubber or hard plastic protector pad between the clamp and the frame, and re-check the bolt every couple of months. If the chainstay is cracked, stop riding the bike - chainstay cracks propagate fast under pedalling load. Surface scratches can be touched up with frame-saver paint and ignored.

Should I get a single-leg or two-leg kickstand?

Single-leg (side-mount) stands are lighter, cheaper, and fine for any unloaded bike under about 60 lb - the bike leans on the stand at roughly 8-12° from vertical. Two-leg (center-mount) stands hold the bike upright, lift the rear wheel slightly off the ground, and don't slip on soft ground or hot asphalt. Two-leg stands are the right call for cargo bikes, ebikes, anything carrying a child seat, and any bike you regularly work on at home (the lifted rear wheel makes drivetrain cleaning and chain installation much easier).

Why don't racing bikes have kickstands?

Three reasons. Weight: even a 200 g kickstand is the equivalent of a meaningful frame upgrade on a sub-7-kg race bike. Frame design: race carbon chainstays are tuned for stiffness and impact loads, and a kickstand clamp introduces a stress concentration in the worst possible spot. Use case: race bikes get leaned against walls in transition zones or hung on rack hooks - they're rarely parked free-standing. Some manufacturers explicitly void warranty if a kickstand is fitted to a race frame, so check the owner's manual before clamping anything to a high-end carbon chainstay.

What kickstand should I use on a cargo bike?

A heavy-duty two-leg center-mount stand is essentially mandatory. Cargo bikes - longtails, front-loaders, and trike conversions - are loaded up and down with kids and groceries, and a leaning side-mount stand will tip the moment weight shifts.
