Best Grips & Bar Tape 2026 - Foam, Silicone, Lock-On

Best Grips & Bar Tape 2026 - Foam, Silicone, Lock-On

Grips and bar tape are the cheapest performance upgrade you can do - and the one most riders postpone the longest. Worn tape costs you grip in the wet; worn MTB grips cost you control on a rocky descent.

What the standards say

Park Tool publishes 5-7 N·m as the spec for most lock-on grip clamps. Over-torque the inboard clamp and you'll snap the bar collar; under-torque it and the grip rotates on a wet descent.

The eight picks below cover lock-on MTB grips, road bar tape from skinny cork to thick gel, and the silicone tape that's quietly taken over endurance road riding.

Cinelli Caleido Cork Tape

1. Cinelli Caleido Cork Tape

Classic cork pick. Cinelli's natural cork tape with rubber backing is the original Italian standard - 2.2mm thickness, medium tack, and an aesthetic that ages into character rather than peeling. Best for steel or titanium road bikes where a synthetic wrap would look out of place.

Ergon GP1 Ergo Grip

2. Ergon GP1 Ergo Grip

Best ergonomic flat-bar grip. Ergon's GP1 uses an aggressive winged TPE shape to spread palm pressure on long flat-bar rides - a real fix for ulnar-nerve numbness that plain round grips can't address. Slip-on (not lock-on), so install with hairspray and let it set.

FIFTY-FIFTY Double Lock-On MTB Grips

3. FIFTY-FIFTY Double Lock-On MTB Grips

FIFTY-FIFTY Double Lock-On MTB Grips are the budget answer to Ergon GA2. Two clamps per grip lock down soft-compound TPR rubber that won't twist in the wet. At $26 they're half the Ergon price and use the same 22.2 mm bar standard.

FIFTY-FIFTY Alloy Bar Ends 110mm

5. FIFTY-FIFTY Alloy Bar Ends 110mm

FIFTY-FIFTY Alloy Bar Ends 110 mm are the cheapest way to add a climbing hand position to a hardtail. 6061 aluminum, forward-curve ergonomic shape, standard 22.2 mm bar fit. Pair them with single-clamp grips so the outboard end has room to clamp.

7. Fizik Tempo Microtex Bondcush

Best all-rounder drop-bar tape. Fizik's Tempo Microtex Bondcush pairs a 2.5mm foam-backed PU surface with high tack - comfortable for 4+ hour rides without the dead feel of pure gel. Wraps cleanly and the synthetic top shrugs off sweat and rain.

Lizard Skins DSP Bar Tape

8. Lizard Skins DSP Bar Tape

Best high-grip drop-bar tape. Lizard Skins' DSP polymer is the same material run by WorldTour teams - 2.5mm thick with a tactile micro-texture that holds gloves even in wet conditions. Pricier per roll than cork but typically lasts two to three seasons.

Common mistakes to avoid

Wrapping bar tape inside-out

Bar tape should wrap from outside to inside as you look down at the bar from above (so the wrap tightens when you pull on the brake hoods). Wrap the wrong way and the tape unravels in a week.

Riding worn grips

Hardened, shiny, or torn grips slip when your hands are wet. Replace MTB grips every 1-2 seasons depending on use; replace bar tape every 6-12 months for road riders.

Buying thick grips for arthritis without trying thin first

Counter-intuitively, thinner grips often help arthritis sufferers more than thick ones - they let your hand stay relaxed. Try Ergon GA2 or ESI Chunky before going to fat foam grips.

Skipping grip glue or hairspray

Slip-on grips need glue or a quick spray of hairspray inside the grip to lock them on. Without it, they rotate when wet - exactly when you need them not to.

The final word

If your hands hurt or fall asleep on long rides, grip choice usually fixes it before stem length does. Try ESI silicone or Ergon ergonomic grips on MTB; switch to Lizard Skins DSP 2.5mm or a gel-backed cork tape on road. New grips are a 15-minute job that can change a ride.
