The rule
Bicycles are prohibited on Interstate highways in Iowa. Bicycles are prohibited on all Interstate highways in Iowa (I-29, I-35, I-74, I-80, I-380, I-680) under Iowa DOT policy. Conventional US routes and state highways — including the cross-state RAGBRAI corridors — are open by default.
What this means in practice
Stick to surface streets, US routes, state highways, and dedicated paths. If your route in Iowa appears to use an Interstate, plan a detour before you start.
