The rule
Bicycles are prohibited on Interstate highways in Texas. Bicycles are prohibited on the Interstate system in Texas under TxDOT regulations governing controlled-access highways. The TxDOT Roadway Design Manual and posted on-ramp signage exclude non-motorized traffic; rural 'no reasonable alternative' exceptions, common in Western states, are not in force in Texas.
What this means in practice
Stick to surface streets, US routes, state highways, and dedicated paths. If your route in Texas appears to use an Interstate, plan a detour before you start.
